Ashleigh Murray is a re-emerging award‑winning Illawarra actress, creative leader and storyteller, best known for her role as Alice in the Logie Award–winning ABC/CBBC/CNBC global TV series Out There. The series aired across Australia, the US, UK and Europe and on the first day of filming this series, 15 year old Ashleigh came home to the news that her Grandfather had passed away from cancer – and it wouldn’t be the last time cancer would emerge in the family.
She recently won Best Actress at the Cannes Arts Film Festival for her performance in the Illawarra‑made short film Car Share and has credits spanning across feature films, short films and national TVCs for brands such as CommBank, Youi and Channel 9. Currently on channel 9 now as constable swan in Mezuzah Man and filming a role in a stan series shooting in July.
Ashleigh serves as a Board Member of Screen Illawarra - a not-for-profit organisation championing the Illawarra as a thriving hub for screen production and a place to grow for emerging screen talent. As well as a pre‑selection judge for SF3, the worlds largest smart phone film festival.
But behind the achievements lies a deeply personal story.
Ashleigh fell in love with performing as a teen actor. But as life unfolded
through a series of traumas and responsibility, the pressure to “play life
safe,” saw her step away from the dream she once held so tightly. Everything
changed the day her daughter was born.
“If she had a dream,” Ashleigh says, “I would move mountains to help her chase it. And I realised I needed to offer myself that same kindness.”
Determined to lead by example, after a 20 year gap Ashleigh has returned to acting, writing and creative leadership, showing her daughter — and all women — that courage means choosing the life that feels true to who you are.
She is now writing her book, Raising the Daughter I Needed To Be, helping open conversations about raising girls with strong voices.
This year, she will perform a powerful medley from The
Greatest Showman — Ashleigh dances as a reminder of how precious life
is, and how the opportunity to pursue our dreams is a privilege. "If
we’re lucky enough to have a dream, we should follow it – and inspire others to
follow theirs too." As a trained dancer, she grew up in the
studio — though she jokes that “was a lifetime and a C‑section ago!” After
losing her grandfather to colon cancer (later spread to liver) and facing
recent diagnoses in 3 of her family/friend close network (all under the age of
37 battled thyroid, testicular & acute myloid leukaemia) now are all thankfully
in remission - Ashleigh dances for them.
