I am joining the 2023 production of Stars of Tamworth Dance for Cancer to support Cancer Council in their mission for a cancer free future.

Because 1 in 2 Australians will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime, I’m bringing everyone together to show off my dance moves all to raise funds and show my support.

Just over a month to go!!

Thank you everyone for your overwhelming support so far! I am fast approaching my original fundraising goal of $5000 so thought I would push myself a little further and see if I can get it up to $6000 before the show.

Who I am and why I am dancing

My name is Erika Savage and I am a Science Teacher and Year Advisor at Peel High School. I am also a member of the Rotary Club of Tamworth Sunrise and am involved in a number of youth-based volunteer roles around our region. I grew up in Tamworth and have been a dancer since I was 8, although age and injuries have prevented me from dancing consistently in more recent years.

In 2022, my mother was diagnosed with Rectal Cancer after a series of complications from previous surgeries. She noticed that something didn't feel quite right, and had a colonoscopy that confirmed the worst. Over the course of the year, I watched on as Mum endured yet another surgery to remove the cancer (successfully), was the recipient of a lifelong ostomy, and went through four rounds of chemo just to be safe. I watched as one of the strongest women I know was attacked by her own body thanks to the chemo, and watched as she conquered her new life with an ostomy. I watched as Mum battled her mental and physical health, and I could not be more proud. Chemo for Mum finished up just in time for Christmas and it was so wonderful to be able to celebrate how far she had come, and bring in the new year with a fresh start. Mum was cleared of cancer in January of 2023 and we are all hopeful that we have seen the end of it!

Cancer Council do amazing work in both research and support for families experiencing what my family experienced last year, and I am so grateful to be able to raise money and awareness as a star in the Tamworth Dance for Cancer in 2023.
