Kirsty Boag

Stars of The Hunter 2026

Kirsty Boag | Hunter Coastal Lifestyle

I’m Kirsty, 39 years old and soon to be 40 by the time the launch party rolls around! I wanted to do something memorable for my 40th year, and I honestly couldn’t think of anything better.

By day, you’ll find me working with the teams at Hunter & Coastal Lifestyle Magazine and Newcastle Weekly. I’m passionate about supporting local businesses and the people who make our community so special.. No two days are ever the same, and that’s exactly what makes me love what I do!

My most important role is being a mum to Christian and Annika, and wife to Charles. After spending two amazing years living in the UK and travelling across Europe whenever we could, we’re back home and making the most of every weekend exploring our own back yard in the Hunter. We love to travel (even local staycations)  and adventure any chance we get. You’ll usually find us sipping coffee at our favourite cafe in Singleton, exploring the beautiful Hunter Valley or soaking up the sun at one of our gorgeous local beaches

We are truly blessed where we live!  .

My motivation for wanting to be part of Stars of the Hunter began back in August 1998, the first time I truly understood the impact of cancer. My mum’s best friend, who was like an aunty to us lost her battle with breast cancer at just 49 years young. It was also the first time I ever heard about the Cancer Council. From that moment on, Mum began a special tradition every year she would buy daffodils on Daffodil Day.

For many years after that, we were lucky. The “C word” didn’t touch our lives again until my uncle was diagnosed with bowel cancer and lost his battle in 2022. He was one of the strongest men I knew, someone I never thought anything could bring down. Losing him was heart breaking and a reminder of how cruel this disease can be.

On the 1st of January 2023, we arrived in the UK for what was meant to be a new adventure. Little did I know it would also bring some of the hardest moments of my life. Six months into our trip, Mum went for a routine mammogram and was diagnosed with breast cancer. It broke my heart to have to help her fight from afar, but she faced it with incredible strength and positivity.

Just two months later, my sister-in-law also received a breast cancer diagnosis. I thought, that had to be it. But life had other plans. While preparing to travel to Portugal, I got a message from a dear friend back home, in her early 40s, with a new born baby, telling me she had cervical cancer that had already spread. through various parts of her body. She is still fighting today, and she is nothing short of amazing.

The worst was yet to come only three days later. I woke up to another message, this time from my best friend (37 at the time). We were both living overseas, meant to be having the time of our lives. She told me she had been diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer.  After a brave and hard-fought 8 month battle, she passed away just days after I returned home in February. I will forever be grateful that I got to give her one last hug. She truly kept her promised and waited for me

When I was first asked to do this, my instinct was to say no (I can't dance) . But then I thought of all the beautiful souls who have gone through hell and  those who are still fighting today, and I remembered some of my best days  were spent dancing and laughing with my best friend.

Five minutes of discomfort or embarrassment on my part will never compare to what these beautiful people have gone through.

My reasons for buying daffodils have grown over the years. They no longer honour just one special person, but all the people I love who have faced, or are still facing, cancer.

I'm truly hoping I can make a difference.
