Lesley Hudson

Stars of Ballina 2024

Lesley lives in beautiful Bullinah (Ballina) within the Bunjalung Nation with her wife Aditya.  They recently became empty nesters when their daughter, Tamsyn moved to Alstonville with her long term boyfriend Cameron to begin her adult life.

She hopes that in the short time she is walking on this earth, that she gets to leave a few legacies for the generations to follow. She realises that she may never know what these legacies will be, however being a trailblazer is not new to Lesley.

In her very early 20’s, she was apart of establishing the Vixen Motorcycle Club (now known as Dykes On Bikes) which was very brave in the homophobic climate at the time.  In response to a spate of gay hate crimes and murders, they decided to patrol the Sydney streets at night to keep fellow gay brothers safe from these perpetrators. This scary group of powerful leather-clad women later became known as the Dykes on Bikes and they now lead the Sydney Mardi Gras Parade as a sign of safe passage.

Lesley loves being in service for my community and has volunteered with the RFS in Lennox Head and Newrybar as a fire fighter.  Over New Years she volunteers as a Rover for ACON at Tropical Fruits Events.  She has helped organise social events for Lesbian Allicance in the Northern Rivers and has been actively involved in recovery events with local drug and alcohol programs.

She has also shaved her head for World's Greatest Shave more than once.

Lesley is an advocate for promoting change and wants cancer to be a thing of the past along with inequality and violence against women. She advocates for these in Australia Post, and as a Manager, she champion a workplace that reflects these beliefs.

In the last three years Cancer became a very real presence in her life. Cameron lost his father, Bill Stewart to brain cancer; the diagnosis was sudden and shocking and his fight and ultimate demise heartbreaking. Then her very dear friend, Eileen in the States was diagnosed with a very invasive cancer with only months to live.  She was a guinea pig for a new cancer treatment which continues to prolong her life and enable her to continue to participate in life with her beautiful wife Fern.

Lesley sincerely hopes that her participation in Ballina Stars – Dance for Cancer helps to fund more revolutionary treatments that can change the impact of Cancer on the lives of those it touches.
