Stars of Narrabri

Hi Everyone, welcome to my bid to dance for cancer!

Like most people, I have close friends who are cancer survivors and know of people who did not survive cancer. My father died of cancer (Melanoma) which his parents also experienced, and which is a constant threat to our family. Cancer is an insidious disease that claims many people before their time. I am grateful for this opportunity to contribute to the Cancer Council by doing something I love.

A bit about myself…I live in Narrabri with my partner Alex and 2 kids. We share our house with 2 dogs, 3 cats, 2 parrots and numerous spiders! I came to Narrabri 20 years ago to work for CSIRO and never left. I am originally from a small rural town in New Zealand, where my interest in spiders and insects led me to research on thieving spiders, then ant wars in Venezuela, social spiders in Israel, and finally pests and beneficials in cotton. Outside of work I get exasperated and have fun with my teenage family and have an unhealthy interest in politics. I enjoy swimming, being part of our local Presbyterian church, singing in Harmony Inc, and dancing.

My Updates

Mick Shields and I cutting some merengue moves at the morning tea fundraiser!

Our first fundraiser – Morning tea at ACRI

We held our first fund raiser last Thursday, which was a morning tea at ACRI that included a dubious exhibition dance by Mick Shields and myself – very dodgy! Thank you to everyone who provided the delicious food and chipped in – we raised $290! I’d also like to thank Mel, Jo and Liza for organizing the event, and Kate, the cancer council representative, for her talk, and of course Mick, my partner in crime. Below is a picture of Mick and me before our dance, the yummy food, and us listening to Kate talk about the cancer council. I will download the dodgy dance once I work out how! Cheers, Mary
