Sonya has lived in Casino her entire life. Her husband Robert and her have just celebrated 34 years marriage. She is a mum to 3, now grown, beautiful, amazing women and grandmother to 15.
Over the years she has been involved with a number of sporting clubs (Casino Soccer (Football) and Netball Clubs (playing and coaching), the Snooker Club, Country Music Club and Casino Lions.
She also worked with the Casino Business Chamber for a period of time and now works at Pentarch Forestry at the Kyogle plant as the Production and Safety Coordinator, which will mark 10 years in July this year.
In 2019 after nearly 12 years with Casino Station, Fire & Rescue NSW she hung up that helmet to take on another role with the NSW State Emergency Service (SES) at the Casino Unit. She also, on occasion, works as part of an Incident Management Team (IMT) for larger events (severe storms and floods). Her passion is training and development and this is what she primarily does with the SES, training and supporting new and existing members to learn and develop their knowledge and skills.
In September 2023 she was asked if she would take up the position of Acting Unit Commander for Coraki, which she did and with the amazing and current members at Coraki, they are working together to help re-grow the Unit there.
Like so many, she has lost friends and family to this indiscriminate disease. She feels honored and privileged to be invited to be a STAR as part of the Casino Stars – Dance for Cancer event 2024.
